Psychologists

Psychologists make up around 60% of Australia’s psychology workforce.

They complete at least six years of university training and supervised clinical experience and maintain registration through ongoing professional development.

Psychologists are qualified to help with:

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Stress and burnout

  • Trauma recovery

  • Emotional regulation

  • Adjustment, grief, and life transitions

They draw on a range of evidence-based modalities, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT, “tapping”)

  • Mindfulness-based and strengths-based approaches

Psychologists cannot prescribe medication but often work collaboratively with GPs, psychiatrists, and other health professionals as part of a holistic care team.

Clinical Psychologists

Clinical psychologists complete the same foundation as psychologists plus an additional two years of postgraduate study focused on the diagnosis and treatment of complex emotional, behavioural, and mental health conditions.

They are trained to:

  • Formally assess and diagnose psychological disorders

  • Develop and implement structured treatment plans

  • Provide therapeutic interventions for complex presentations

Educational & Developmental Psychologists

Educational and developmental psychologists specialise in understanding how people learn, develop, and perform across the lifespan.

They work with children, adolescents, and adults to:

Assess learning and cognitive profiles

  • Identify neurodivergence or developmental differences

  • Support emotional and social development

  • Provide recommendations for schools and families

These psychologists are experts in interpreting cognitive and educational assessments, helping parents and teachers tailor learning environments that match an individual’s strengths, needs, and processing style. Their insights are particularly valuable for students with learning difficulties, giftedness, ADHD, or autism spectrum profiles.

Provisional Psychologists

Provisional psychologists are early-career practitioners completing their final year of supervised practice after five years of tertiary study and clinical placements.

They are skilled in assessment, formulation, and therapy, working under the close supervision of senior psychologists to ensure the highest standards of care.

While services provided by provisional psychologists are not eligible for Medicare rebates, their consultation fees are adjusted accordingly, offering accessible support.

At 4Thought Psychology, all provisional candidates are personally assessed by our Director, Louise Johnson, ensuring only practitioners with exceptional professionalism, empathy, and clinical ability join the team.

Their enthusiasm, up-to-date knowledge, and eagerness to learn contribute to the vibrant, collaborative culture of our practice.

Psychotherapists, Counsellors
& Life Coaches

Counsellors provide a safe space to explore life challenges, transitions, and relationships.
They use reflective dialogue and goal-oriented techniques to help people clarify concerns, explore options, and strengthen emotional awareness.

Counselling can help with:

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Grief, loss, and life change

  • Self-esteem and confidence

  • Communication and boundaries

  • Managing everyday stress

Life coaches help clients identify goals, uncover barriers, and design practical steps to achieve personal or professional growth.
They can assist with career transitions, motivation, purpose, and developing a more fulfilling lifestyle.

Both counsellors and coaches at 4Thought share the same core values of empathy, clarity, and empowerment — helping clients translate insight into action.

If you’re unsure which type of practitioner is right for you, our intake team can help match you with the best fit for your needs.
