Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one's attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment. Large population-based research studies have indicated that the practice of mindfulness is strongly correlated with well-being and perceived health. Studies have also shown that rumination and worry contribute to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, and that mindfulness-based interventions are effective in the reduction of both rumination and worry.
"When we are mindful, deeply in touch with the present moment, our understanding of what is going on deepens, and we begin to be filled with acceptance, joy, peace, and love." - Thich Nhat Hanh
How is Mindfulness used in therapy?
Mindfulness practice is being employed in psychology to alleviate a variety of mental and physical health conditions including depression, stress, anxiety, and drug addiction. Recent studies have demonstrated mindfulness meditation is a therapeutic technique that significantly attenuates pain through multiple unique mechanisms. It has gained worldwide popularity as a distinctive method to handle emotions.

Clinical studies have documented both physical and mental health benefits of mindfulness in different patient categories as well as in healthy adults and children. Programs employing mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) have been widely adopted in schools, prisons, hospitals, veteran support centers, and therapy practices.
Benefits of Mindfulness:
  • Learn to manage symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and panic more effectively
  • Gain a greater sense of emotional well-being
  • Increased self-awareness
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Better management of chronic pain
  • Improved sleep
  • Greater physical well-being, including reduce blood pressure and higher immune function
  • Reduced impact of negative thoughts and emotions
