Cognitive / Educational Assessments

Picture
Cognitive assessments assist parents and teachers in better understanding a child/adolescent's intellectual abilities. An in-depth understanding allows parents and teachers to better help a child/adolescent who may be struggling academically and/or socially.

The main tests used to measure general cognitive abilities are:
Picture
WPPSI-IV
* Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence.
The WPPSI-IV is used for children of ages 2 years 6 months to 7 years 3 months.

WISC-V
* Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children

The WISC-V is used for children/adolescents aged between 6 years to 16 years 11    months.
Both assessments provide information about a child's general IQ (or intelligence) as well as areas of intellectual strength and difficulty. It is the specific areas of strength and difficulty that reveal the most helpful information as opposed to just getting a general IQ score.

Subsequent tests are assessed as needed.

WPPSI-IV

Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence.
  • For ages: 2 years 6 months to 7 years 3 months.

The WPPSI-IV is a reliable and valid measure of intelligence in young children that is more age appropriate and user friendly for young children. It gives a clear indication of a child’s general intelligence and is one way to help assess for school readiness.
The WPPSI–IV gives an overall IQ score and Verbal and Performance Scores.

In general:
* Full Scale IQ score is a representative of general intellectual ability.
* The Verbal IQ score is acquired knowledge, verbal reasoning and comprehension, and attention to verbal stimuli.

* The Performance IQ Score measures fluid reasoning, spatial processing, attentiveness to detail, and visual-motor integration.

WISC-V
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
  •    For children/adolescents aged between 6 years to 16 years 11 months.

The WISC-V provides sub-test and composite scores which represent intellectual functioning in specific cognitive domains as well as a composite score which represents general intellectual ability. The WISC-V takes from 1 ½ to 2 hours to complete. The report and scoring of results takes a qualified psychologist from 4 to 8 hours to complete.

The main benefits include:
• Early identification of reading & learning issues
• Useful in identifying learning disabilities
• Understanding of an individual’s learning profile
• Identification of gifted children
• The assessment also helps Schools make appropriate; accommodations and develop learning plans for individual students, and
• The ability to determine learning processes, which include both strengths and weaknesses and the impact that they might have on individual student performance.
